About
I am currently working on my master's thesis on the historiography of danish jazz. The project will survey and analyze the concept of a danish jazz tradition and look at what narratives that constitute the danish jazz history. My theoretical approach is eclectic, but inspired by postmodern historical theory, mainly that of Hayden White. Thus, the aim of the thesis is also to employ some of the recent methods and trends in international jazz research over the past two decades, which, I hope, will shed some new light upon danish jazz. The thesis will also stress the fact that the writing of jazz history and aesthetics of jazz are intertwined and interdependent.
This autumn I will also do research into the use of Danish (and Scandinavian in general) tunes in jazz. In particular I will look upon Carl Nielsen folk-like ("folkelige") songs. I will present my paper, "Carl Nielsen in the Jazz Repertoire" on the Carl Nielsen Symposium at The Royal Library in Copenhagen in November.
